The original cottage, designed by Ray Mandel in west coast fir, is an important example of west coast fir design in Muskoka. It had been designed with a bench as a barrier instead of a railing, but the client's insurance company was asking for a replacement. We were requested to design a railing that would maintain an open view. The solution, in cedar and steel mesh mirrors the structural rhythm of the house, provides maximum view, as well as being open to lake breezes.
