Cultural Heritage Landscape Designation Report-University of Toronto Back Campus
A report recommending designation of University of Toronto's Back Campus as a cultural heritage landscape, undertaken on behalf of Keep Back Campus Green, a community movement which is seeking to preserve the grass common for ongoing formal and informal sports and community use.
The Back Campus has a history of sports activities, as well as formal and informal assembly activities. The place is strongly associated with the University of Toronto and both World Wars, notably as the site of a World War I pilot training facility, the Soldier’s Tower commemorating U of T’s losses, and finally a place of inspection of the troops by visiting King George and Queen Elizabeth just before World War II. It creates a lawn setting for the designated university buildings that surround it, including University College (National Historic Site), Hart House, Massey College, Trinity College.
Councillor Adam Vaughan took the report to Toronto East York Community Council where it received unanimous support, as it did at the Toronto Preservation Board. Report at the link below:
